Thoughts On Hurley, The Most Recent Album From Geek Rockers Weezer
Geek rockers Weezer return this year with their newest studio offering. Following the highly mixed reviews their earlier record (Raditude) received, what's to be expected on Weezer's new album, Hurley?
1) Memories
An okay pop-rock track with a catchy chorus, and quintessentially simple Weezer lyrics. Featuring backup vocals by Johnny Knoxville and the rest of the crew!
2) Ruling Me
Sometimes the more recent Weezer tracks have been criticised for being too shallow, and this song is very unlikely to allay that criticism. But, it's fabulous for what it is: a simple, high energy pop-rock track.
3) Trainwrecks
This is a deeper, more indulgent, slower song with awesome crunchy guitars and sensitive hooks.
4) Unspoken
Hottest song on the CD. Opening up as a light and tender acoustic song, with a bit of atmospheric flute, it ends with some heavy guitar!
5) Where's my sex?
Definitely a dirtier song, but only in terms of the sound; not the lyrics. It ain't about sex, it's about socks. A little uninspired, but the bridge is good.
6) Run Away
Intense and emotional song, with an angsty, almost irritated vibe. The most expressive track on the album, performed with Ryan Adams.
7) Hold On
Fantastic demonstration of pop-rock. The catchy repetition of the melody hijacks your brain and sucks you along with it.
8 ) Smart Girls
Songs such as this are perhaps why Weezer lyrics get criticised. You'll either love it or hate it. Fluffy, generic and feels manufactured.
9) Brave New World
This song has some energy to it, but doesn't manage to go anywhere. Not captivating.
10) Time Flies
Feels almost like a demo, a great tune to sing along with. A cute little song with a different feel to the other songs of the record.
Score: 6.5 / 10
All in all, a sizable improvement on the previous record. A good, enjoyable pop record, if not groundbreaking or striking.
