What you need to start off with is a simple one gallon milk jug. Of course, wash it out completely first to be sure there is no leftover residue from the milk inside. Allow it to dry, and when it is dry, then put the cap on the container and stand it up where you are going to work.
On either side of the handle, cut openings that are about three inches in diameter. The holes should be fairly high on the jug to ensure the bird seed won't spill out from the container when you are all set to use it.
Below the large holes, use a nail to punch a small hole, where you can insert dowels. The dowels will be where the birds can come and perch to nibble on the food. Just make sure that the perch sticks out a couple inches on each side so birds may easily perch.
Use the nail once more to punch holes in the milk jug neck. This should be done an inch or so under the cap of the milk container. Then you'll take some wire and run it through the pockets, twisting it together at the top. This is what you will use to hold up the bird feeder.
Now you are finished making the simple bird feeder. All you have to do is load it up with some birdseed. Take it outside and use the wire ends to hang it from a tree or some other type of support in your yard. If you want to attract a variety of birds, opt for black oil sunflower seeds with your new bird feeder.
