All Custom USB Drives Are Not Developed Similarly
Custom USB drives are much like muscle cars. You know the drill. Some muscle cars are parked together. They both look great. But it's what's under the hood that really counts.
With custom flash drives looks are significant, but it's efficiency and reliability that ultimately count. However, there's more than meets the eye when you look on the inside of these drives. But not everybody has the technical skill to understand that not all promotional USB drives are created equally. Some are substandard.
As they say, you get what you pay for. When a company makes an impossibly low price for your USB drives, it could be a sign that they are using lower quality materials and then glossing them over with pretty designs and trendy styles.
There are 3 main classes of flash drives: Class A, Class B and Class C.
Class A Drives
These are top of the line. A really reputable company will use high quality chips that have the manufacturer's name and a serial number printed on them. If you were to open the USB drive up, you can see who actually made the chip set. Well-known manufacturers are Samsung, Micron, Intel and Hynix - familiar brands that customers can trust. They are higher priced than lower quality chips, but they have a lifetime warranty. So you can be sure that promotional flash drives that are Class A will last longer.
Class B Drives
As the designation implies, these are second level drives. These chips are created by Original Equipment Manufacturers who buy components from the other manufacturers above them, but then assemble them in-house. Because they are made at the OEM level, they aren't checked to the same standards as the manufacturer chips. For this reason, they may not perform as well or last as long. Typically you'll see these chips utilized on custom USB drives in the 64 MB to 128 MB size range. There's nothing wrong with these chips, it's just that they may not work at the same levels as Class A flash drive materials.
Class C Drives
These are the bottom of the barrel. They are the lowest price and lowest quality. If you see a price that is 10 to 20% less than that of a brand you know is offering Class A promotional USB drives, they are probably using Class C. These can be dangerous to use as they use recycled chips made of leftover portions of the original wafers. These may have originate from old cell phones, toys or other devices. Class C drives can have failure rates reaching 30 to 40%. Even worse, they can start to fail after only 10 cycles, i.e., the saving and deleting of a file. They tend to run hot and can cause other issues.
If you're ordering drives that have your logo or advertising message on them it's highly recommended you order ones with Class A chips. This is particularly true if you're using them as promotional drives as giveaways or selling them at the retail level. There's little bit goodwill to be achieved by saving a couple cents on the front end just to have angry customers and recipients on the back end.
This is one promotional item where quality is key. Using Class A chips makes sure that they have been tested and meet the high quality standards of the producer and aren't simply factory seconds or worse, recycled.
All Custom USB Drives Are Not Developed Similarly There are many companies out there offering to make you custom usb drives. But they are not all delivering the same product.
