A Big Bird Feeder Can Attract Freeloaders Other Than The Wild Birds You Want To See

There are many different ways to bring birds and also other small animals in close for you to watch. Doing so can be a great learning experience for you and your kids. A great way to accomplish this is to add a large bird feeder somewhere in your yard. Putting one close to a deck or patio is an excellent location, but elsewhere in the yard will do as long as you take a few precautions.

When you bring in birds by putting up a large bird feeder, you are eventually able to also attract other animals. Squirrels are the most likely freeloader who find a feeder simply like a free buffet. And once a single squirrel finds it he will likely tell all of his friends. This is fine if you don't mind partaking the food with them as long as you know that a single squirrel can empty a feeder quickly.

If your goal is to only attract wild birds then the proper precautions needs to be taken. Not placing your large bird feeder close to trees makes it harder for the squirrels to access it. Be sure it is squirrel moving distance away from the trees or anything else they could use to jump to the feeder. If you use a bird feeder pole or a garden hook as a holder you will need to coat the poles with something to deter climbing.

A homeowner can smudge grease or some other substance that is slick but over time rain will wash some of it off. And, it is unsightly to see a slicked up pole in this manner. A better solution might be planting a thorn bush around the bottom and letting the runners take over the pole but that gives its own hazards including what it will do to you when you want to access the large bird feeder.

You can also place a disc around the pole about halfway up the length so that squirrels are unable to maneuver around. Just be sure it is far enough off the bottom that a squirrel can't leap onto the top of it and thus make its way to the bird feeder for a free meal.

Placing a large bird feeder closer to a deck or patio will also hinder animals from trying to take the food intended for birds. It will also bring birds close enough to let their color and activity can be enjoyed more. However, if your activities on the deck are normally noisy ones or with lots of movement, the wild birds will not likely venture near. Quiet activities such as sitting out with your netbook or silently sitting just enjoying the view should not drive off the birds.
